Taughannock Falls, near Ithaca, NY, is a lovely site. We visited there with some friends in October 2013, when trees were turning colors but the air was warm, and had a wonderful day.Taughannock Falls State Park has grassy picnic areas by Cayuga Lake, but the real attractions are the falls. A gentle half-mile hike (handicapped accessible, with some assistance) brought us to the foot of the highest single-drop fall east of the Rockies (yes, higher than Niagara, though not nearly as broad, of course). Along the way we saw smaller tumbling falls, dramatic sheer cliffs, and golden forests. Taughannock Falls is one reason they say, “Ithaca is gorges.” I recommend it for nature lovers anywhere in the northeast.
