There’s a charming children’s book by Robert McCloskey called Make Way for Ducklings, in which a mother duck leads her eight baby ducklings safely through Boston traffic with the help of friendly humans. This is not that story. Here is a mother duck and her nine babies, only they aren’t babies any more. I can only guess which one is the mom based on who’s in front. When I saw them paddling around the marina in a tight formation, I heard her voice in my head saying, “You’re grown up already! Quit following me around. Shoo!” Then I started imagining teenage ducks hanging out in the basement, griping about how there’s nothing good to eat around here, will you PLEASE just LEAVE ME ALONE, but first I need a new jacket, and I was all giggles. Hang in there, Mom. It gets better.
